Thinking about it I totally understand the physics why the tail breaks off instantly (because of the small rotor not fighting against the main rotor rotation anymore) but when I first saw it, it totally surprised me. Aside from it being a terrible accident that thankfully everyone survived this is extremely interesting footage that I rewatched numerous times.

I just love the focus here on obeying the rules and following protocol. I work in film production (mostly commercials) and I can so relate to cascading events. There will be a mishap when you rush trying to save money or time. Read the department of safety report in the Alec Baldwin rust shooting if you have an interest. The whole incident along with the death if the 2nd AC on the Greg Almond film plays out just like one of these recaps and this one in particular. Just un-needed destruction of life and/or property because of being “smarter” than all of the experienced people including those who might tell you no. Great Work! I vote for you in the next presidential council on safety!!

Please correct me if I am wrong, when a peson is selcted for a Ri Long, which I had an opprotunity to do, we the ride along should also be breifed as I was breifed. but then I havd a friend in the family who was a helicopter pilot so I knew some basic questions. I was briefed and then said unless you see something like birds or something speak not a word, itis imparative for safety. I agreed then signed my life away . Graig looks familair. Iam not sure if he partcipated in the one and only and last Air show in Kelso wa. later the Air boss took me from the camera had me dawn the orange vest to maintain crowed control to prevent people from crossing the line in to where the aircraft are taking off, some guy mouthed of to me and said, you think your big and bad, I said no, I jsut do not wnat to witness you being hacked and chopped by the props..or see you head split opn when that wing meets with your head. and then I added a sight joke, I would feel sorry for the plane do to your idocy..they guy said well said and gave me the thumbs up. I remer that day well, i was allowedin to the flight breifing room where they spoke on celing, as well as to calling off the air show if the ceiling becomae to low they spoke on a front coming in, and spoke on the wing to wing manouver ad if turbuance was discussed on when to not to do that, then the pilot did an under the air craft and I filmed that as well as the altimiter, airspeed and a the panels this was incase if something goes south and the camera or tape survived I would have it recorded , then we broke fration, flew over the columbia river and over the mill sight and ship. as I filled out side . i noticed the camera going light to heavy and this made m feel uncomrtable and immediatley stopped recording.. the real test was coming. would I say anything? and that dang stall light and horn sounded. I relaxed and sid, this pilot gotus in to a stall he can get us out, or...something went wrong and we were goign to meetJesus. We exited the stall, nd returned to the airport lined up and dang tht rnway is a whole lot shotr than what it looks like coming in. before approach i stopped recoding, checking to make sure that the strap on the camera was around my hand and wrist , basically making sure I could secure the camera so it does not become a distraction. I was not comfortable with showing the approach using the camera due to the verying changes in I guess what you call g forces. When we landed, we taxied to his sot, shut the plane down and then we grounded the craft...Oh..side note..I did not know that planes pee....untill one day I saw fuel being spit out of the planes wing.. i said did thatplane just pee, and the pilot said yup..that is why it is grounded, changes in pressure effect the fuel prussure and fuel needs to equalise to preven distortion of the wings... that I di not know. and the reason fro grounding he explaind to me, is for that very reason when the plane ejects fuel you don't want an ignition from static. I learned a lot that day. not only about the aircraft but of the people as well like Willima Holowman the third. had I the oeny, i would have bought one of his drawings. I got to go up with a second pilot. I remained silent on that flight, only this time both pilots pulled me to the side and said were going to the tent. /..the tent? he said yup.. bring that cmera of yours as well.I said oh boy what didI do this time, so as I played the video they aid stop. whn I was fying over the mill, what I was not expecting was the question..what targets do you see. my jaw dropped to the ground and then I jsut realized.. I would have been the one behind the camera recording...targets as they did in WWII.. I was not expecting that. and I stated the mills and the 3 ships, the misll ar production plants the 3 ships, are transport vessls . I was not expecting the tables were to be turned in that manner..then we flew over the mall and told me to stop..target or not a target, i said not a target? I think bombing civilain places would be wrong. he said, that is the right repsonse. I fully understood now, how not only was i a ride along, but iwas also doing an important task had I been placed in such a situation. . I learned jsut how important some of those jobs were , and I had no idea how dangerous they could have been . from ride along to arial recon. I am so glad thatthe millitary does not do that to day .. I am lad the craft are fitted with cameras, fliy at high altituteds and hopfully reamin stealthy, and if not tht means, then i am glad we have satelights..and good ol google earth ... funny how the millitary uses that from time to time. more interesting is how some countries don't hide there stuff very well.. but I also kno there is a delay as well. I want to say thank you for your time served, and to say thank you for this video, it puts things in to perspective. and how important communiations are. sitiational awareness is key to survival. a break in communications , a deviation, can blind you. this is what i have learend, situational awareness is key on the ground and in flight. and situatioanl awreness entails all that is going on on grond, in the air, and a great deal more. it is also being aware of when those planes start up because the wind from thoe props can blow a person, or object into another person or object. this is why I always listend and eves dropped when thepilots re speaking and motion people that the plane is preparing start I must assit you to a safer area. because even though pilots are in the cock pit, you are right, there are blind areas. I was cught in the thrust, when I seen the engines start, I instinctivley took a knee facng the craft. meant i am staying put as he taxied. once the plane took offthe signal guy gave me a thumbs up. I got up and and he said wise choice, you let me and the pilot know where you were and you were staying put.. I learned being at the airport is the most dangerouse place of all. one mistake and your either dead or seriously maimed or wounded due to one mistake. this has allowed me to have a deepr respect for all pilots. and especially those who fly our War Birds. I wish you well. and i hope you continue to enjoy your flights.oh and yes I know about the Jesus Nut...and on a helicopter there are two.one on main rotor and one on tail rotor.. I am not sure if they still use those terms or not.. but that is what my uncle lary. Lary Quick...aka Crazy Larry. when i was a kid, we were introduced to this strange contraption called the helicopter. I wish I knew where he was..because I want to say thank you to him for his time served and for the awosm gift that so few kids get.. He did the infamouse "going to stealth mode on starting with theenignes.. the craft became silent aside from the rotors spinning. I could feel the chopper being moved down them level, then down then level.. we had no idea he shut down the engines.. he said were auto rotating. He restarted in mid air.. after that. I am glad Ihad nothing to eat after the manovers he did. when we laneded, and waited after the chopper was shut down my brother truned green and lost his lunch. we were 5 an 6. dad instructed us when lary landed, my first darting was my last..I literally ate..eh horse biscuits. larry brought some rather eh highly educational..eh.. vifoes that were worse than any horro movies we ever saw. about aircraft safety. I nik named it hambergur bob.

Hoover, can I ask, or do you happen to know why the Hell this particular type of aircraft was NOT required to have a FDR OR CVR? I would think that this should have been required, considering it was a plane with the ability to transport more than just the pilot. It makes no sense to me.

It is interesting that so many (maybe most) pilots flying VFR into IMC don't just don't look at or trust their artificial horizon. Even a minimally trained instrument rated pilot should know better. I fully get how *not* trusting your instruments can lead you into a blind spiral dive (our inner ears only sense acceleration, and can't tell the difference between G-loading and "down").

After you watch these videos, there is no way the United States would allow a real landing on the moon! These are videos with extreme detail, showing the mistakes that experienced pilots can make.??? Had no idea! Incredibly sad. Therefore, one is left with the conclusion that, despite the importance of the moon mission, America took a gamble, knowing the long history of mistakes from experienced pilots. this video is not about NASA or the moon landing, BUT.. a tremendous wealth of information that clearly states the probability of experienced pilot error. So our leaders, knowing how many bad things can go wrong in the air…..simply took a gamble on three pilots or astronauts as the entire world watched?
